WikiWomen Summit at Wikimania 2024: Working together to achieve gender equity in our movement

We are thrilled to announce the return of WikiWomen Summit at Wikimania in 2024, marking a significant milestone in our movement's history. This event serves as a pivotal opportunity to unite contributors passionate about addressing the gender gap within Wikimedia projects.

Building on the success of last year's WikiWomen Summit 2023, where contributors shared insights and rallied for collective action, our focus in 2024 is to review past achievements and chart a course for future endeavors towards gender equity in our movement. Workshops will delve into outcomes from WikiWomen Camp 2023, including the Declaration and Engagement Plan, which outline key recommendations for enhancing safety, participation, and engagement among gender-focused contributors.

Aligned with the ethos of Wikimania's theme, "Collaboration of the Open," we extend a warm invitation to all contributors interested in advancing gender equity to join us for WikiWomen Summit 2024 on August 07th, 2024. Together, let's sustain our commitment to making gender equity a priority within our movement.

Why a special WikiWomen Summit at Wikimania?

WikiWomen Summit at Wikimania 2023 in Singapore

Throughout the years, the Wikimedia movement has organized various global events dedicated to closing the gender gap. Notable among these are the WikiWomen Camp in India (2023) and Mexico (2017) and Argentina (2012). WikiWomen Summit provides a unique platform to synthesize learnings from WikiWomen Camp 2023 and expand participation in shaping the future of gender-focused initiatives. We recognize the invaluable contributions of gender organizers and contributors who have propelled us forward and aim to broaden participation for a more inclusive movement.

The Summit embodies feminist solidarity, prioritizing gender inclusion and equality. It offers a safe and inclusive space for sharing strategies, fostering debate, forging alliances, and nurturing skill development essential for our collective growth in the Wikimedia movement.

Organizing in the Wikimedia movement often happens online, so the opportunity to meet in person and build relationships is irreplaceable for connection strengthening and skill building, which is essential for us to thrive individually and collectively in the Wikimedia movement.

How do I get involved?

WikiWomen Summit at Wikimania 2024 will feature workshops and strategies designed collaboratively. We invite volunteers to help shape the program and approaches for the day. If you're passionate about contributing to the WikiWomen Summit workshop agenda, leave your name below or reach out to campaigns[at]wikimedia[dot]org with any inquiries.

To encourage broad participation and knowledge sharing beyond the strategy workshop, we encourage you to submit your proposal through the primary Wikimania portal (the call for proposals are now closed). Proposals, including those with a gender focus, will undergo review by the Wikimania proposal team and will be included under existing tracks.

Can’t attend the WikiWomen Summit pre-conference day? The WikiWomen Camp 2023 COT will be submitting a session to the main Wikimania program track, where attendees who cannot attend the Summit, can learn about some of the strategic developments in the gender space.

WikiWomen Summit at Wikimania Workshop

Date: 7 August 2024

Room: Voore, Room # 19, 26 and 25

Format: Livestream and Onsite, with Interpretation

Branding: We encourage attendees (onsite and online) to wear blue on this day.

Historically, the color blue exudes a sense of trust, stability, and intelligence. It symbolizes equality with simplicity in various cultures along with beautiful factors like “confidence” and “authority”, that are noninvasive and objective. Unlike red, blue is non threatening, fostering peace, dependability and security.

Since the color produces a slow physiological response, blue is also considered to be the color of creativity. Just like the vast expanse of the sky and the depth of the ocean, blue represents infinite possibilities, wisdom, and knowledge. As the theme color for Wiki Women Summit, blue symbolizes the empowerment, strength, and resilience of women across the globe. It encourages unity and sharing of diverse perspectives, mirroring the collaborative nature of Wikimedia movement and the importance of recognizing and celebrating the achievements and voices of women in all fields.

Embracing the spirit of blue at the summit inspires a sense of positivity, harmony, and progress towards a more inclusive and equitable world for women, we encourage you to have something blue on you,  on the day of summit 7th August (dress, tshirt, bandana, headwrap, any piece of clothing or visible accessories). Let’s add some cool & fun elements to the intensity around goals of the Wiki Women Summit 2024.

Please note that it’s a request, not a mandate. :)
