What is "the" speaker training program (in the FAQ), and where can I find it?

The FAQ section refers to "the" speaker training program, that may help us be accepted into the program. The wording implies a specific training program.

What is it referring to?

Virtual corner for sessions

We have been thinking about running a couple of sessions at Wikimania; one session will be part of the Hackathon. These two sessions will be around user research (for Toolhub project) and technical support (for Small wiki toolkits (SWT) project). Due to the nature of these sessions, one session might not be enough, and we might want to run several of these, ideally with people in small groups. We haven't entirely finalized the format yet, but we are considering having a dedicated virtual corner where folks can hop in and out any time and work with us. We are still in the early stages of our discussion and wonder if there will be a virtual corner at Wikimania where we could run these sessions. There will be space available beside the hackathon space;
  • 2021:Community Village - focus on specific communities -- where you are welcome to set a subpage for the Toolhub
  • 2021:Learning areas - focus on training for anyone interested -- open training sessions can be hosted from here, along with how to videos and other media

At the Wikimedia Hackathon this year there was used WorkAdventure as a Platform and I really liked it for talking to other people. At the Remote Chaos Experience of the Chaos Computer Club they have also used Workadventure with extensions and so it can be used for a lot of if people if needed. It were great if you offer a platform like Workadventure. I think if there is one platform it is better than more platforms. I dont know if a dial in with a phone is possible at this system. From my point of view this is helpful after not everywhere there is a good internet connection. From my point of view this Wikimania offers the chance to offer more people the chance to be involved and for that it is from my point of view important that there is a support for people so that they can attend. Are there plans for such a support. Emergency contact number

In the Pretalx system, on page2, it asks for "Emergency contact information - this contact number will be used in case of any emergency during the event"

Does this mean:

  1. My personal phone number (e.g. if I seem to be missing my start-time)
  2. A phone number for someone else related to my submission (e.g. my backup-speaker/session-partner)
  3. A phone number for someone connected to me personally (e.g. my health-emergency contact, such as a relative/neighbor/friend)

Hi Quiddity (WMF) The reason we are collecting phone numbers is to make sure that we have easy access and a way to reach you in timely manner during the event, in case of any technical challenges. This process is part of the risk management and contingency plan for this event and will be used only if we experience technical difficulties from the production or your side. The phone number that needs to be provided should belong to one of the presenters (individual/collective track) or a coordinator of the affiliate (movement groups & affiliate track). Formats?

In the How will program applications work in practice? blog post the formats are listed as: "Lecture-based session: 20 mins presentation + 10 mins of Question & Answer, Fireside chat / interviews: 30 mins, Discussion (roundtable, panel): 45 mins, Workshops + Tutorials: 45 mins, Celebrations/Entertainment: 30 mins" but on the 2021:FAQ they are listed as: "Lecture-based session or Case Study: 20 mins presentation + 10 mins of Question & Answer, Roundtable discussion or Panel Discussion: 45 mins, Workshop or Tutorial: 45 mins, Celebration/Entertainment: 30 mins, Lightning Talk: 10 mins". Movement Groups & Affiliates Submissions

Good day there!

We've just submitted a proposal for Movement Groups & Affiliates. But we are wondering that is there a official list of Movement Groups & Affiliates that only the team on the list can sign up for the Movement Groups & Affiliates session? We are not a like a regional Wikimedia group but a University's research center who's been holding a Wikimedia incubating program of many small languages for years. Hi all, on the submission form I would have found a field useful for any other comments. For instance, I would prefer if I could create subtitles or translations of my talk myself, for the languages that I'm fluent in. Pretalx bugg Wikimania 2021

Pretalx don't works... why no make submission as usual !?

Why one more time using an external website to deal with Wikimania submission !? Can we do it here as usual and with in our habits ? More than this, the pretalx website don't works...   • Pretalx is working fine for me, you'll need to expand on what issue you are having. We went with Pretalx because unlike previous years the scheduling of a virtual program benefits from the additional tools. You are the only who has raised this so I hope its just unique to you. I contacted the WMF team, and Pretalx on this both had assured me the problem was fix. Perhaps you could try creating a new account and see if that works. Either way we do have your submission and it will be reviewed by the program team. Hi @Gnangarra, It still doesn't work. I've deleted my account and now, I can't create a new one. So weird... But well, I don't want to spend any more time. Panel vs Roundtable

  • The difference is in the role of the moderator, in a panel the moderator doesnt have to have any knowledge of the subject as their role is to ensure that the Q&A allows all members of the panel to heard when answering questions and ensure that a wide variety of the audience is able to ask questions. In a round table the moderator is knowledgeable on the subject, starts the discussion then also leads the Q&A their job is then to facilitate discussions while both Q&A's come from the participants and they can also provide clarity when needed on the issues being raised. In addition to the above, in a panel you have panel members. The role of the audience depends, but generally the role of the panel members is much more prominent. In a round table, the session is much more interactive, and there is much less of a distinction between audience and speaker, other than the moderator. But many variations on both models exist. How strict is the time limit?

  • @Leaderboard: times will have be very strict each segment must start and finish on time as the WMF is paying for multiple audio translations to and from English, Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic, Mandarin, and German that will take effort behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly. Character limit off by 1

Remo is Free software. Isn't it?

Hi everyone!

Some time ago I saw on this wiki that Remo was going to be used and that was «open source». Just for my curiosity, I contacted Remo to ask if it was Free as in freedom software (with 100% JavaScript released under a Free license; without proprietary trackers; without proprietary resources; without minified unclear stuff or bitcoin miners; without requiring any proprietary client; weird unclear external resource; ecc.), and they said «yes yes yes» and they linked me their GitHub repository and I was happy. But. Today our kind User:Ainali [1] pointed out that this situation is not clear enough and, moreover, now I can't find the above assertion anymore and I can't find their GitHub repository in any way. (Did they delete the repository?)

Today I tried Remo from this public URL https://live.remo.co/e/wikimania-practice-day-1 shared from the Wikimania chat on Telegram and I can confirm that Remo it's proprietary software. It has proprietary trackers, proprietary minified JavaScript, weird dependencies from external big companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon. Here all of the external dependencies:

These are some of the external dependencies that can be found with "uBlock" and NoScript for Mozilla Firefox. Most of them are proprietary :( Some of them are user trackers.

I believe this discussion is duplicate in various places by now. Please let's pick one location for a good long term conversation. I think you'll get most out of such a conversation after this year's conference. There are many things to improve if we want to repeat this online conference style, and one thing to consider in that context is the choice of venue. To the best of my knowledge, Remo is not open source. I also read on some places that it was, but can't pin down where that assumption started. We did make an effort to support free platforms in some other places (like the session submission platform), so the willingness is definitely there. If you have practical questions left with regards to the platform, I'm happy to see if we can find an answer. 2021 WM Eventbrite registration procedure: some snags

Dear Lodewijk aka Effeietsanders,

I am contacting you as you are listed here as one of the organizers. (I have also noted this email route but I would rather use my WP account and enquire in the clear, also to advise other Wikipedians by linking hereto should they raise similar doubts on other wikiprojects.)

Please advise me about the T&Cs of the Eventbrite registration for 2021 WM. As a test I singed up yesterday using an anonymous email account and not providing my wikinym, for obvious reasons. However, after 24 hours I have not received a working link or password, apart from the generic confirmation "Order Confirmation for Wikimania 2021 ... The organizer will follow up with instructions on how to redeem your ticket and access the event."

Should we thus wait and keep looking up in this temp account until WM commences? Are there additional T&Cs (Eventbrite's? Organizers'?) apart from the ones published here? Is registration decided manually, e.g. based on the answers provided in the form? I have some other comments about the process itself but let me leave it at that for now.

I looked it up now, after 96 hours. The only info I can see there is a colourful "Location: Online event", without a reffed URL. Tried with another email account, also anonymous: same results. I could see no updates in relevant Wikimania help pages about the process.

@Zezen: I asked around, and you should receive an email from the organizers with all relevant information after your registration. This will include login details to our event platform Remo. Your registration will typically be approved, unless you're subject to some kind of restriction (which you would have been informed of).
